Work packages

Roughly, the work packages can be divided into two sections (basic research: WP 1-3 and R&D technology: WP 4-6). Based on results of current and future application experiments performed with the FZB and other Bacillus strains with several crops, ornamentals and vegetables in different Chinese regions, highly efficient formulations will be developed and produced in one or more industrial fermentation plant(s), preferentially in China. In addition, results obtained from the work packages devoted to basic research will be immediately used to improve the bioformulations. Development of different bioformulations consisting of one ore more of the most efficient Bacillus strains and with special fields of application is envisioned. At least at the end of this experimental period a decision will be made whose of the bioformulation(s) will be selected for production in large scale and registration allowing its (their) use in Chinese agriculture.

Basic research for further improvement of the bioformulations envisioned

Work package 1: Transposon mutagenesis of PGPR Bacillus strains B9601-Y2 and FZB42 for detection of genes important for plant growth promotion and biocontrol.

Work package 2: Analysis of gene expression in FZB42 by DNA-microarray, Real-time PCR and 2-D gel electrophoresis in dependence of plant-bacterium interactions.

Work package 3: Identification, characterization and test of bacterial strains harbouring optimal sets of genes for their plant growth promotion- and biocontrol activity.

R&D technology (performed in collaboration with Abitep GmBH as "Auftragnehmer")

Work package 4: Large scale production of bioformulations based on spore suspensions of FZB24 and FZB42 and aimed to delivered for extended field trials for plant growth promotion of crops, vegetables and ornamentals.

Work package 5:Work package 5: Development of bioformulations with optimal application properties in different fields of plant protection and plant growth promotion by use of selected Bacillus strains and their secondary metabolites.
Responsible: Abitep G.m.b.H Berlin in collaboration with Humboldt University and Chinese authorities (Agricultural universities of Beijing, Yunnan and Nanjing, and partners of Chinese Industry)

Work package 6: In order to prove utility of the different bioformulations developed in frame of WP4 and by Abitep GmbH, field trials will be performed in different Chinese areas using different crops, vegetables and ornamentals.
